Kilimanjaro National Park
Kilimanjaro National Park
Mount Kilimanjaro lies within the Mount Kilimanjaro national park and houses Africa’s tallest mountain, making up most of the park. It is located in the northern region of Tanzania that also shares its name – Kilimanjaro. The area belonging to the park is defined as any area next to or on the mountain that is above 1820 meters, including the montane forest that surrounds it, an area that has sometimes been plagued with deforestation.
The mountain was formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and has three main peaks, namely the Shira plateau, Mawenzi, and lastly, the Kibo all of which may be described as volcanic cones. The tallest of the three peaks is Kibo, where the roof of Africa is located, as well as the most easily seen of the three.
In every picture of Mount Kilimanjaro from afar, Kibo would be the whole of the visible snow-covered peak and its highest point lies at 5895 mamsl – Uhuru peak. Kibo is also the only one of the three peaks that has a crater at the top, but don’t expect any bubbling pit of the fiery volcano as it is dormant.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is January-March and June-October. January-March is generally colder than June-October and there is a higher probability of encountering snow on the summit.
How to get there
Kilimanjaro National Park is situated near a town called Moshi and it can easily be accessed by plane or road. But first, you need to reach Kilimanjaro International Airport.
